The Abrahamic religions
Oxford has got thriving Jewish, Christian ans Muslim communities. Islam embraces all the Abrahamic religions. We are all sons and daughters of Abraham. There are many in this world who try to divide. The Qur'an teaches us otherwise:
2:62 ''The [Muslim] believers, the Jews, the Christians, and the Sabians- all those who believe in God and the Last Day and do good- will have their rewards with their Lord. No fear for them, nor will they grieve.''
3:3-4 ''He (God) sent down the Torah and the Gospel in the past as guidance for mankind.''
2:136 Say: "We believe in God, and in that which has been bestowed from on high upon us, and that which has been bestowed upon Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and, their descendants, and that which has been vouchsafed to Moses and Jesus; and that which has been vouchsafed to all the [other] prophets by their Sustainer: we make no distinction between any of them. And it is unto Him that we surrender ourselves."
2:285 ''The messenger believes in what has been revealed to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers; they all believe in God and His angels and His books and His messengers; We make no difference between any of His messengers.''
29:46 'And do not argue with the followers of earlier revelation otherwise than in a most kindly manner - unless it be such of them as are bent on evildoing and say: 'We believe in that which has been bestowed from on high upon us, as well as that which has been bestowed upon you: or our God and your God is one and the same, and it is unto Him that we [all] surrender ourselves.''
4:150 'Those who deny God and His messengers and seek to make a distinction between God and His messengers and say, 'We believe in some messengers and disbelieve in others', and desire to adopt a position in between. Those indeed are they who are denying the truth beyond doubt'
22:40 'And if God did not repel some people by others, cloisters, and churches, and synagogues, and mosques in which God's name is much remembered, would have been pulled down.'
109:6 'Unto you, your moral law (way, religion), and unto me, mine.'
2:256 'Let there be no compulsion in religion.'
5:47-48 'To each of you We have given a law and a way of life. If God would have desired He would surely have made you into a single people -professing one faith (and following one law). But He wished to try and test you by that which He has given each of you. So excel in good deeds. To Him you will all return in the end, when He will resolve that upon which you disagreed.'
Annual Interfaith Friendship Walk
Since 2003 the annual Oxford Interfaith Friendship Walk has been a popular event for those who like to befriend followers of other religions. The walk starts at the Oxford Jewish Centre and from there meanders through the streets of Oxford, passing other places of worship and ends with a meal at the Central Mosque. As many participants agree 'We have far more in common than that which divides us.'
